A friend asked me why I like hiking yesterday, and just like other human interactions my communication skills were lacking as I tried to convey to her the reason, so I just said something like "I like being out in nature and stuff".
As I was hiking along the trail today I thought of the real answer.
I love to hike because it gives me a tangible goal that I can set my mind to and actually see and feel a quick accomplishment. I love the reminder that I can do hard things. That I am capable of doing things I shouldn't be able to do/feel like I can't do. I love to hike to clear my mind or occupy it with things that need to be mentally sorted out in the quiet of nature. I love to reach the top of the mountain and gain a perspective that I just can't seem to get on the ground. I love to be able to see all around me and remember how incredibly insignificant I am in this great big world.
Yeah, that would have been a much better answer.
